Dog Sports Spotlight: Scent Work
One of the most natural and rewarding dog sports is scent work. Scent work taps into a dog’s strongest sense, their nose, and turns it into a structured, purposeful activity. Dogs are trained to locate specific scents and indicate when they’ve found them, whether in boxes, rooms, outdoor environments, or more complex search settings as they progress. What makes scent work so powerful is that it builds confidence, focus, and problem solving skills while also providing mental enrichment that is deeply satisfying for dogs.
It is accessible to nearly all breeds, ages, and energy levels, making it an excellent outlet for both high drive dogs and dogs who may not thrive in more physically demanding sports. Beyond sport, scent work can also improve engagement, impulse control, and handler communication, which often carries over into everyday training and real world behavior. At Dawgs at Work, we love scent work because it honors what dogs are naturally built to do while strengthening the human–dog relationship in a meaningful way.
